Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat and Assistant Secretary-General for UNCG Sanda Ojiambo held discussions on ways to collaborate around climate change. The UN Climate Change Conference, COP27, is scheduled to take place in Egypt’s coastal city Sharm El-Sheikh in November.

While Egypt has affirmed its stance of pushing forward the global commitments regarding climate action, Ojiambo, on behalf of UNCG, revealed that the UN agency is keen to enhance cooperation within the framework of COP27.

According to a prepared statement, the minister also highlighted Egypt’s emphasis on accelerating efforts to become a green economy and apprised that the government has created a climate change project list that will look to finance projects in the food, energy, and water domain in line with the National Strategy for Climate Change 2050.

Mashat also shared details about introducing an umbrella program called “Nowfi” to the green government projects in energy, food, and water. This program looks to enhance partnerships between government, development partners, and the private sector to support climate action.

She also highlighted the importance of the active role played by the private sector, civil society, development partners, governments, and non-profit organizations in advancing climate change efforts.

Additionally, Egypt has also announced that it will hold five regional roundtables in the coming months, in line with the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27), to catalyze investments in different climate sectors. These roundtables will be led by Egypt in cooperation with UN regional committees and UN high-level climate champions.
