A report by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) says that Dubai’s public transport services and shared mobility options have helped over 304.6 million people reach their destination in the first half of 2022.

In comparison, only 202 million riders had reportedly used public transport during the same time last year when the pandemic-induced lockdowns had limited the movements.

Dubai’s public transport services such as Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, public buses, marine transport (abras, ferry, water taxi, water bus), e-hail rides, smart car rental, bus-on-demand, and taxis (Dubai Taxi and franchise company taxies) were used by 1.68 million riders every day in 2022, while the same was limited to 1.1 million users in the first half of 2021.

Among these services, Dubai Metro has had the lion’s share of passengers and has transported over 36% of riders. In comparison, taxis accounted for 29% of passengers – more than 65% of all passengers. At the same time, buses ferried over 29% of the total riders.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, said, “The first half of 2022 saw a three percent growth in the ridership rate, in comparison with the same period in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an important indicator of the rising demand for public transport and the resurgence of economic activity in Dubai.”

“Dubai’s public transport network, which is fully integrated, has now become the backbone of people’s movement around Dubai. The network succeeded in coaxing a change and evolution in the culture and attitudes of the community towards using more public transport means,” he added.
